Mods:
- Add thumb gusset which develops out of one of the cables (means changing cable placement)
- Have cable direction the same as hand worn (i.e. cable crossing in front – left-leaning – on left mitt and cable crossing behind – right-leaning – on right mitt)
- Add optional fourth cable round (only on top of hand, not on palm)
- Worked using magic loop method
Left Mitt:
First cable round: [k4, p1, k4, p1(2), CF, p1(2)] 2 times
Second cable round: [CF, p1(2), k4, p1, k4, p1(2)] 2 times
Third Cable Round: work as for 1st cable round
Follow pattern to 2 rounds after 3rd cable round.
Thumb gusset:
Round 1: [k4, p1, k4 p1(2)] 3 times, k4, p1, pm, M1R, k4, M1L, pm, p1(2).
Next round: work in rib pattern to marker, sm, p1, k4, p1, sm, p1(2).
Next round: work in rib pattern to marker, sm, M1R, p1, k4, p1, M1L, sm, p1(2).
Next round: work in rib pattern, incorporating new stitches into rib pattern as knits.
Repeat alternating increase and plain rounds until there are 12 sts between markers ending with an increase round.
Next round (optional 4th cable round): CF, p1(2), [k4, p1, k4, p1(2)] 3 times (optional cable is only on the top of the hand).
Next round: work in rib pattern to marker, remove marker, slip the 12 gusset sts to a stitch holder or waste yarn, remove 2nd marker, turn work and cast on 4 sts using the cable cast on, turn work back and work in rib pattern to end of round.
Work a further 9 rounds in rib pattern then bind off.
Thumb:
Place the 12 gusset stitches back onto the needle and slide to the center of the cable; pick up 2 sts from the gap, 4 sts from the cable cast on edge, and 2 more sts from the gap (20 sts total); slide needle end through and pattern 1st 4 gusset sts; place marker to mark beginning of round; divide sts evenly 10 and 10 and work in rib pattern for 4 rounds.
Cast off loosely.
Right mitt:
First cable round: [CB, p1(2), k4, p1, k4, p1(2)] 2 times
Second cable round: [k4, p1, k4, ;1(2), CB, p1(2)] 2 times
Third cable round: work as for 1st cable round
