bella’s coat

A dog coat for Miss Bella (very loosely based on a Bernat pattern called I-Matey):

C1: green
C2: black
M: tan
Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash
US 8
US 7
Using C1 and larger needles cast on 78 sts.
Neck and chest:
Work in k2, p2 rib for 10 rows.
Change to M (break off C1)
Work 22 rows in st. st. in striped pattern (12 rows M, 2 rows C2, 6 rows C1, 2 rows C2)
Leg openings:
k14, c. off 7, work across 36 sts, c. off 7, knit to end of row.
(*All sections are worked separately)
Beg. with purl row, work 9 rows in M and break off M.
Repeat for other two sections.
Joining row:
k14, turn, cable c. on 7, turn, k 36, turn cable cast on  7, turn, k 14 (78 sts).
p 1 row in striped pattern
Work 2 rows in striped pattern
Shaping (keeping pattern correct:
Row 1: [k2, p2] x 3, k54, [p2, k2] x 3
Row 2: [p2, k2] x 3, p54, [k2, p2] x 3
Repeat rows 1 & 2 seven more times.
Keeping pattern correct, begin next section of shaping:
Row 1: [k2, p2] x 4, k44, [p2, k2] x 4
Row 2: [p2, k2] x 4, p44, [k2, p2] x 4
Repeat rows 1 & 2 three more times
Keeping pattern correct, begin next section of shaping:
Row 1: [k2, p2] x 5, k38, [p2, k2] x 5
Row 2: [p2, k2] x 5, p38, [k2, p2] x 5
Repeat rows 1 & 2 three more times
Begin decreases (center seam ends here):
Dec 1 st at beg of every row for next 22 rows (38? sts).
Dec 1 st at each end of alternate rows for next 5 rows (28 sts), finishing with a wrong side row.
Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows and place remaining (20?) sts on a holder.
Leg openings:
Using M & beg at cable cast on edge, pick up 7 sts, then 8 from side of opening; shift cable; pick up 7 sts from c. off edge, then 8 sts from side of opening (30 sts, divided 15 & 15).
Knit 6 rows.
Change to C1 and work 4 rows of k1, p1 rib.
Cast off loosely (knitting every st).
Edging:
PM at 10″ from bottom center of collar.
Using US7s and C1, pick up & knit 47 sts from marker to holder; knit across (20?) sts on holder; pick up & knit 47 sts from end of held sts to marker (114 sts).
Work in k1, p1 rib for (5?) rows;  in the first round decreasing once in the middle of the sts knitted from the holder (113 sts)
Cast off.

    What breed/size of dog is Bella?
    Do you have any pics of her wearing your knitted coat?

    I am a Library Officer at the Peel Campus Library in Mandurah, Western Australia, and I knit too! :-)

    Bella is a pit bull mix and belongs to my best friend. Unfortunately, I don’t have a pic of her in the coat.

    I have relatives in Mandurah – small world!
